Daniel waves from a table. "Hello! We're more of a coffeehouse than
a pub here. Unfortunately, it's been very quiet for a long time."

Well, well. Someone is still actually keeping tabs on the old place.
Me, too, on occasion. Hi, Dan. I kind of forget who you are, but the
sig is familiar.

Maria helps herself to a mug 'o' dark roast and sinks into the plush
cushions of a chair. "wow! --two more days until we're both retired!
I'm really happy for my hubby! He'll just love retirement! That'll
sure be different having another person at home all day (in and out)
besides the dog, Anubis, and Dexer, Sadie and Tiger, the cats." Maria
takes a couple of swigs of her good coffee and sighs. "It'll be like
being on vacation all the time..." She takes out her current paperback
and starts to read a bit in the soft light.

From her own comfy chair, Diana lifts her mug of Earl Grey (with lots of
milk this time) in the direction of the most recent occupant of the
other comfy chair. "Hello, Maria. Welcome to the Amethyst." Diana
manages a genuine smile, though she can't help envying people who have
achieved retirement status. Especially now that her own husband is
retired, while she isn't! "Mind telling me what you're reading? I'm a
constant reader myself. Always looking for something else good to add
to my reading list."

Maria sits up in her chair and lifts her own mug, "Nice meeting you,
Diana, thanks for the Welcome!" She appears to flush as she says, "I'm
reading a book by Jim Marrs, 'Alien Agenda'. In the chapter on crop
circles, which I'm reading now, I'm learning that the phenomenon is
older than I had thought: 'Another account from 1678 referred to the
'mowing devil' of Hartfordshire, which both impressed and frightened a
farmer by mysteriously cutting his field of oats overnight.'
p.410---kind of interesting." Somehow Maria feels that she needs to
explain that she has read many authors on many subjects since she has
retired from her child welfare social work position a few years ago.
"Two books will read next are: 'The Left Hand of God' by Michael Lerner
and 'Consent To Kill' by Vince Flynn, whose political thrillers I find
engrossing. What are you reading, Diana?" S;) <smile> Maria goes
over to a shelf and looks for a book---doesn't find what she is looking
for (a small navy blue volume) "Thought I put it here several years
ago...oh, well, I have another in my backpack---a quotation diary. I
love this: 'Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's
coming attractions.' Albert Einstein" --Maria just wanted to share
that. She goes to get a fresh refill and thinks she'll read a bit more
in this friendly atmosphere.

"Ah, then you're familiar with the place. Good! What am I reading?"
Diana chuckles. "I have two projects going at the moment, one is to
reread all of the Hercule Poirot mysteries by Agatha Christie, and the
other is to finally finish Robert Jordan's 'Wheel of Time' series. I'm
up to 'Cat Among the Pigeons' and Book 9, 'Winter's Heart',
respectively. I'll probably start Jordan's Book 10 next, then when it
begins to bog down near the middle, as the last few have seemed to, I'll
run in a couple of the Poirots. Enjoy your coffee and book, Maria."

Daniel looks up from his rereading of the last installment in the
Vorkosaga and comments. "Of course, that implies that Jordan will
someday finish the Wheel of Time series."

I'm hoping to get ahead of him, at least. How many is he up to at this

Maria closes the book she has just finished reading and looks toward
Diana and Dan. "Hey, Dan, I haven't met you yet--so-- Hello! ------
And, I think there are at least eleven books to that Jordan series so
far, Diana. I think some of the most recent seem to give background and
history of their universe rather than extending the story." ( Maybe the
story is meant to end at the beginning like a wheel.) Maria stopped
reading it in the middle of "Lord of Chaos", the sixth book, last
spring, and probably won't read any more of it until her winter beach
vacation. She's curious about what other gimmicks they create, and
which characters will survive, since that Aes Sedai, Morgaine (sp), was
eliminated. Having had enough coffee for awhile, Maria gets some cold
brew tea with lemon and starts a new book.
